Paper Planes Armchair
Design: Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien (2008)
Outsized origami
Functional sculpture, comfortable and welcoming seating which is both durable and light, and seemingly gravity-defying. Paper Planes originated from a fabric design based around graph paper: its shape comes from the folding and modeling of paper as an exploration of form and structure, to create angles, lines and polygons. Its seeming simplicity demands masterful sartorial skill: the lines of the fabric must be perfectly aligned with the geometry of the chair which means that there is no room for error.
