René Barba for Gervasoni, functional sculptures for everyday life

René Barba’s story moves across continents and disciplines, which is exactly why his work feels so unique. Born in 1965 in Havana and raised in the United States, he later moved to Paris to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, one of Europe’s most respected design schools. There he honed an approach that blends American clarity with European refinement, always focused on the relationship between body, object, and space.

Over the years he has built a respected international career, collaborating with leading brands such as Ligne Roset, Cinna, Koziol, BBB, and Serax. His pieces have been exhibited in Milan, Paris, Tokyo, and New York, placing his work firmly in the world of contemporary design while staying deeply human and inviting.

Barba describes his work as functional sculpture. You feel that in the way his furniture and lighting for Gervasoni play with proportion and curvature. Lines are clean, volumes are carefully balanced, and details are edited down so that what remains is essential and expressive. His collections, including Ripple and Pajama for Gervasoni, have a sculptural presence, yet they never overpower a room. They are designed to live with, not just to look at.

At JANGEORGe Interior Design & Furniture we see René Barba as part of a global conversation around soft modernism. His pieces work beautifully in both restrained, minimal interiors and layered, collected spaces. A single lamp, chair, or table can become a quiet focal point, adding structure and personality without noise.

Whether you are drawn to his lighting or his seating for Gervasoni, each design reflects a precise, calm confidence. These are objects made to last, to move with you from home to home, and to age gracefully alongside your life.
